The drive to the highest point of Hammerknuden, Ørnebjerg (Eagle Mountain), is adventurous. The narrow road winds up the mountain in many serpentines and one hopes that there is no oncoming traffic - there are few places to turn.
Once at the top, you can see the picturesque Hammerfyr Lighthouse, built in 1872 from granite blocks from the nearby quarry. Hammerfyr is 21 meters high and the lighthouse's viewing platform is 91 meters above sea level. This lighthouse was actually a bad design because its light was often swallowed up by low-hanging clouds or fog. Therefore, in 1895, down at the northern tip of Bornholm, the smaller lighthouse Lille Fyer was built by Hammerodde as an auxiliary light.
Hammeren fyr was withdrawn from normal service in 1990.
