Taquile (Spanish) or Intika (Quechua) is an island in the Peruvian part of Lake Titicaca. It is about 45 km from the Peruvian coastal town of Puno.
The island is about 5.5 km long and up to 1.6 km wide. The highest point is at 4,050 m above sea level. The approximately 1500 inhabitants are organized in a cooperative and refrain from the presence of a police unit.
The island provides itself with food through fishing and terraced cultivation (especially potatoes). Taquile is famous for its weaving and knitting. Spinning, weaving and knitting are mainly carried out by men whose textile products are of such high quality that in 2005 their textile art was included in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and in 2008 included in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage Humanity was taken over.
